Environmental Projects

Ecoport

Port of HaminaKotka Ltd wants to become a pioneer in taking environmental and safety issues into account as early as possible. Ports are hubs where several operators work together.

The indirect environmental impact of a port is significantly wider than its operating area. To anticipate the environmental challenges in the future, and meet the interest groups’ needs even better, the Port of Kotka created the concept of the Ecoport project. Ecoport is part of the city of Kotka’s Ecocity project. Ecoport is also a natural part of the new Port of HaminaKotka Ltd.

OXY – Under the Surface

OXY is a project aimed at improving the state of the Baltic Sea, in which private companies and public operators work in order to improve the quality of the sea water on the Finnish coast on voluntary bases.

The most severe problem for the Baltic Sea is eutrophication. OXY helps under the surface, where the nutrients loaded in to the sea are causing eutrophication. OXY aims at reducing the level of nutrients in the sea water by oxygenating the areas suffering from hypoxia.

OXY’s first target is Tammionselkä in the Hamina archipelago. Oxygenating the areas suffering from hypoxia will commence in June 2011. The project lasts 3 years.

OXY is one the commitments of the Baltic Sea Action Group, the President of the Finnish Republic and the Finnish Prime Minister. All of OXY’s cooperation partners have volunteered their contribution to cleanse the Baltic Sea. The project is coordinated and managed by the Pöyry Corporations.

The project has been funded by the European Union and the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment in South-East Finland.
