Waste disposal instructions for vessels
THIS INSTRUCTION DOES NOT CONCERN VESSELS WHICH HAVE BEEN EXEMPT FROM THE OBLIGATION TO LEAVE THEIR WASTE AT THE PORT.
GENERAL
All treaties and laws ratified by the state of Finland concerning the environmental impacts of vessel traffic are followed at the Port of Hamina.All vessels visiting the Port of Hamina must follow all directions, the Port Regulations of the Port of Hamina, and other instructions. It is strictly prohibited to release any type of waste in the sea. Littering and dumping of waste in the Port area is forbidden.All air pollution regulations must be followed. If the waste management regulations are violated, the party violating them will be fully liable to pay damages. Waste disposal instructions are delivered to vessels upon arrival at the Port.
The disposal of the waste types specified below is included in the waste management fee of the vessel, which is based on the size of the vessel and which is given in the list of service charges of the Port.
No later than 24 hours before arrival at the Port of Hamina, a vessel shall submit a vessel waste report of all waste that is carried onboard and left at the Port from the vessel. This report shall be submitted to the Ship Service Centre of the Port of Hamina, fax +358 5 2255 459 or by e-mail to shipservice@portofhamina.fi
SOLID WASTE FROM VESSELS
When in the Port, vessels are provided with a sufficient number of refuse sacks for waste generated at the vessel.The crew of the vessel shall take the refuse sacks to waste containers, the location of which is indicated on the map overleaf. Mixed waste shall be placed in the grey containers, burnable energy waste in the orange containers, wood waste on separate pallets, and metal waste in the blue containers. Only sorted household waste may be put into these containers.
HAZARDOUS WASTE FROM VESSELS
If the vessel wants to dispose of hazardous waste (oily containers, fluorescent lamps etc.) or waste generated in the cargo or during stevedoring, this must be stated in the vessel’s waste report. The crew of the vessel shall place hazardous waste in non-leaking and closed containers or bags close to the waste containers.
If the vessel wants to dispose of oil waste or lavatory water created in the vessel, this must be reported in writing to the Ship Service Centre and to the service supplier which has a relevant agreement with the Port no later than 24 hours before the vessel arrives at the Port.
If a tanker ship wants to dispose of ballast water or tank washing water which contains chemicals, contact the cargo operator.
FOOD WASTE ORIGINATING FROM INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC
Food waste originating from international traffic refers to food waste or waste which has been in contact with food, delivered from vessels which have deviated in their route to outside the European Union. Such waste must be delivered by the crew of the vessel separated from other waste and packed into a non-leaking refuse sack and placed in the yellow waste container.
The waste management regulations of the Town of Hamina and Port of Hamina concern in all respects, including sorting, all waste transport companies and also those vessels which have an agreement on arranging their waste management through means other than the waste management service of the Port of Hamina.
